THE 10 MAHAVIDYAS is a 2 year series of the 10 wisdom GODDESSES in the VEDIC PANTHEON, the embodiment of the MOTHER DIVINE in her various sacred emanations, exploring the yantra, image of the deity and the mantra to invoke the grace of the appropriate deity to enhance our worship, healing and direction of self empowerment to bring forth HER benevolence and grace.
TRIPUR BHAIRAVI is the 5th of the ten Mahavidyas, the shakti of the ruthless Shiva. Tri means three and pura means plane of existence, so this Goddess is the aspect of the divine mother who is immanent on the three planes of existence, the physical, astral and celestial planes known as bhuvah ( bhurvarloka or swarloka). She is also known as Dakshinamurti. Thus she has an affinity with KALI. Kali destroys the fears of death. TRIPUR BHAIRAVI destroys the nine impediments of the mind: sickness, incompetence, doubt, delusion, sloth, nonabstinence, erroneous conception, non attainment of any yogic state, and the inability to remain in any yogic state. These are the nine obstacles that create our common fears. TRIPUR BHAIRAVI terrifies those who cling to the nine impediments and who keep her away from union with her Lord, who is seated in the highest chakra, so she effectly destroys all obstacles that prevent the ultimate yogic union.

This, the 4th of the Mahavidyas is called BHUVANESHWARI, which means she is the sovereign queen of the total existing phenomenal world. She is Ishvari, the divine mother as the sovereign of the existing bhuvanas. Her seat is the heart of the phenomenal world and presides over the heart chakra in the individual consciousness. In the DEVI BHAGWAT PURANA there is a story about BHUVANESHWARI: once Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva quarreled over which of them was the Supreme. When the quarrel became serious and each started using his powers to prove his supremacy, the divine mother intervened, and took them with her to her abode, where Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva saw themselves as her three woman attendants and realized their mistake. They had been deluded by the illusory maya shakti and forgotten that they were only tools used for creation, preservation and destruction. Their source was the same and they were only three aspects of her infinite energy. Thus the tantric scriptures claim that the Mahavidya BHUVANESHWARI is the same prime force which manifests herself as the phenomenal world.

TRIPUR SUNDARI is the fountain head of beauty and helpful in connecting with the delicious attributes of the feminine, especially in our aggressive world. The scriptures say that KALI, TARA and SHODASHI are the most important of the ten wisdom Goddesses, and it is said that TRIPUR SUNDARI is SHRI VIDYA herself and beyond the three gunas. She dwells in the three worlds of manas, buddhi and chitta. She is the mother of the the three Gods: BRHAMA, VISHNU and SHIVA. She is also known as LALITA, the graceful one, and KAMESHWARI, the desire principle of the Supreme.

TARA is the second of the mahavidyas, and the embodiment of the rasa ( emotion ) of speech. She is mentioned in the Brahmand Purana as guarding the pond of nectar of manas, which is synonymous with mind. Invoking her sweetens every aspect of our being and self expression. Without her permission none of us can cross the pond of mental delusions that keep us bound, rigid and ignorant preventing our full experience of the elixir of life. Siddhi of TARA is simple and possible by just remembering her name. If one calls out to TARA in distress she appears to a true devotee and helps. This makes her a Goddess for anyone and everyone.

KALI, the first and most powerful of the tantric Goddesses is also the feared and most misunderstood image, as KALI represents the kundalini force and is invoked to remove ignorance ( avidya ). She is also known as Adya ( first born ) and one of the names used for Kundalini Shakti. KALI in her primordial form conquers the forms of false attachment in our psyche and actions/interactions. KALI, is Mother Gauri, the wife of Lord SHIVA in his destructive aspect , known as Mahakala, hence she is known as MAHA KALI, reminding us that everything in the phenomenal world is time bound. KALI is the goddess of this great internal transformation, and preparation for death of any attachment and ignorant behavior, the basic obstacle to spiritual growth.

KAMALA is the 10th of the ten Mahavidyas, known as the Lotus Goddess of delight. She rules over love, beauty and bliss. KAMALA is one of the sanskrit names for Lotus, and the Lotus represents the principle of unfolding thru the different chakras in our evolution; particularly the Lotus of the heart. KAMALA depicts the water of fulfillment, the flowering of divine grace and love in ones consciousness as the ultimate state of being. Any acknowledgment of the Divine presence in outer form of beauty and splendor invites a worship of KAMALA. The outer worship of KAMALA is nothing but a reflection of the love and beauty that resides within our hearts and is ongoingly purified by deepening our devotion.

This, the 9th of the Mahavidyas is called MATANGI, who relates to Saraswati, the Goddess of wisdom and creativity. MATANGI rules over music and audible sound, not just the spoken word. She is a Goddess of learning and eloquence. She governs that stream of consciousness that enters our mind thru thought and wants to be expressed by both listening to and giving forth sound. MATANGI represents the highest form of Para-Vaikhari, the supreme word as a direct revelation of the highest knowledge in human speech from which all scriptures and teachings arise. MATANGI represents the instruction of the GURU through the spoken word. By honoring her we also honor the GURU. The joy of the divine word is within the realm of MATANGI and represents the ministerial power of the Goddess Divine. She gives us the ability to communicate with all other Gods and Goddesses thru the power of mantra. MATANGI rules over all forms of knowledge, counseling and teaching and resides in the throat chakra, the center of speech.

The eight of the Mahavidyas is BAGALAMUKI, the hypnotic power of the
Goddess. BAGALAMUKI is the stunning radiance that comes forth from the divine word that leaves others silent and grasping for words. She is the Goddess most invoked for success in discussion and debates because she holds the key to the power of truth or illumined Self nature. She comes thru with the weapon of spiritual knowledge and can not be defeated. BAGALAMUKI gives us the power to overcome hostile forces which are set in motion by negative thoughts and emotions. She does so thru paralyzing and freezing that force and putting it to rest. It is a hypnotic state that on an inner level is the mastery of our own thoughts and energies by its ability to turn each thing into its opposite. She turns speech into silence, knowledge into ignorance, power into impotence and defeat into victory, dissolving each state into the unborn and uncreated stream of consciousness, taking us beyond the fluctuations of life and death.

DHUMAVATI is the seventh of the Mahavidyas, and the embodiment of the Grandmother Spirit amongst the Goddesses. She is the great teacher that bestows the ultimate lessons of birth and death thru her wisdom and experience.
With this deity our youthful fancies and immature fantasies evolve beyond the smoke screen of delusion. Her nature is illumination revealing the depths of the unknown and the unmanifest. DHUMAVATI is portrayed as a widow. She is devoid of a masculine principle and the wise woman of the cosmic Goddess pantheon. On the outer level she depicts poverty, suffering and destitution, all the things we fear in life. On the inner level she conquers all these delusions and guides us to seek the ultimate reality. She represents the primal churning and original chaos that underlies all creation. She is the yoga nidra, the yogic sleep where the yogi is merged into pre creation consciousness and goes beyond the field of death.

CHINNAMASTA, is the varjra yogini of the Goddess pantheon. She is the aspect of KALI, a deity who in her archetypal depiction as the headless one, drinking her own blood, will bring the Seeker to a state of consciousness beyond the mind. Here we encounter the unreality of our own identity as an embodied being. To be without a head is a metaphor for going beyond the body attachment to the thought composed mind so we may have access to the universal consciousness beyond thought. The severed head is a symbol of liberation.
